Counter-mapping is a strategy of unmapping & unsettling the silent but inherent power contained a map’s claim to objectivity. Counter-maps expose the silences, taken-for-granted “knowledge” and exclusions produced & reinforced by maps. Counter-maps transform new representations into new resistance.

Vibrating Border Resonance

A counter-map of the Maltese archipelago: Malta, Gozo & Comino. Generated by AI with the aim of highlighting the fluidity, resonance and connectedness of borders

I call this map “Vibrating Border Resonance”. I used AI to render this image of Malta. The prompt I used was “Create a map of Malta, Camino and Gozo. Instead of representing those landmasses, represent them as concentric lines that are corresponding with the landmasses but evokes a sense that they are in vibration. That they are not only solid – but they are also vibrating lines. Please do this in greyscale.” Just as in the moving maps – using colors that would vibrate, I want to evoke the sense of movement, the fluidity of borders – and in the case of Malta, Comino and Gozo, that fluidity vibrates with the liquid borders that surround them.
